I recently started watching vlog channels like, Patricia Bright, Jennie Jenkins, Shirley B. Eniang, Barbarian, Samantha Maria act; on youtube which really inspired me to create the same and also a blog. Mainly because most of these bloggers had vision and passion for what they loved and have now created a huge platform from it! I didn’t realise how important social media is until I recently started looking at the blogging aspects of it. Realising that you can use your time to create they image of your brand to portray your passion! Despite the negative views vlog/bloggers might receive, they keep at it and are growing!
My name is Marjorie Kargbo but you can call me Marj K for short and I have finally decided to get myself out there. I have been planning this for weeks with sleepless nights thinking of ways in which I can pursue a blog channel/ blog and now here I am!
I am a London Based printed textiles Designer and printed textiles has been my thing for as long as I can remember. I graduated as a designer in 2012 and also 2014. Twice, with two degrees, one in Surface design and the other in Textiles design.
I know some of you guys might be thinking…”what is Surface Design or Textiles Design?” . But that is to come in my following article.
I have always been a creative individual and my very first career choice was to be a fashion designer ( I guess fashion has always been a part of me). I can also remember also wanting to be singer (for those who know me) and an actress. But singing and drama were things I played around with and fine art and textiles design were what I’ve always held on to from school. Later at sixth –form college (high school) I did three art related a levels, Fine Art, Textiles and Graphics design (and that was not easy).
I just could not see myself doing anything else rather than to be an Artist or Designer and I was known to be good at what I did. Hence the reason why I am a textiles designer today. With my craft I can draw, paint and use creative elements to design things for fashion fabrics.
I spent five years in University discovering myself as a designer by doing 3 years at the University of the Arts London; one year doing an Art and Design Diploma, then a two years foundation degree in Surface Design (I thought it was more practical for me as it included work experience). I later had to reapply for an additional year to get my Bachelors of Art degree and later decided to take up two years studying Printed Textiles Design. I know I took the longest route but it was worth it!
I have been a graduate for over a year now and I have gained some amazing experiences, such as being a part of pageant show for Miss Sierra Leone UK 2015 and two internships with well known British design studios such as Amanda Kelly and Liberty London. I am now a freelance designer for one and work full time for the other.
I have never really thought of using YouTube as a platform and didn’t really understand what it meant to think outside the box until now.
Thinking outside the box is a huge statement especially for a creative individual like myself.
I know that a person should always have a positive mindset and be determined in achieving his/her goals. One thing I also know is that it doesn’t matter where you are now but what really matters is where you want to go!
These are just the reasons why I have decided to start this Vlog channel and also blog to keep me going with what I love to do and to inspire you all with the creative world I am in.
